In case you haven’t already caught on, YouTube launched their Insight service on Wednesday and it has some rich potential for you if you do any viral or other video promotion of your music.

This post on the YouTube blog announcing the Insight release describes the analytics service as “a free tool that enables anyone with a YouTube account to view detailed statistics about the videos that they upload to the site.”

Now you can see which countries you’re getting YouTube attention in, which is useful information if you’re considering exporting your music to new markets. You can also see what days of the week your videos get the most views and plan to release new videos or website content to reach fans when they’re watching.

How do I Access YouTube Insight?

In the right hand column of the video list in the ‘My Videos’ section of your profile you’ll find a link that says ‘About This Video’. Click the link and you’re taken to a dashboard with a graph and a map. The graph measures the number of views and the popularity of your content. The map shows you the regions where your content is most popular.

For anyone with privacy concerns, it’s important to recognize there is no personally identifiable information available in Insight.

The best part I can see so far is that even though the service only launched this week, there is historical data on your videos so you can put Insight to use right away to analyze past trends.

The YouTube blog goes on to say there are additional features on the way:

We’ll be making new features and additional information available fairly quickly — like a specific breakdown of how viewers discovered the video — so keep an eye out as we roll out new features. As for now, you can find currently available metrics by clicking under the “About this Video” button under “My account > Videos, Favorites, Playlists > Manage my Videos.”
